Objectives
1: To investigate the validity of two emotion network models: We will study the temporal dynamics of task-related activations in the cortical and subcortical structures described by the two models using intracranial recordings that provide excellent temporal resolution.
2: To provide an in-depth, multi-modal characterization of the emotion network involved in processing facial expressions:We will provide the first multi-modal characterization of the emotion network in terms of the functional (FC) and structural (SC) connectivity. FC will be inferred using task-related gamma activations, and the nonlinear correlation coefficient h2, while SC will be assessed using DWI.
Abstract
Emotional states are one of the main contributors to human behavior, and are heavily influenced by the physiological responses of the human body to internal and external stimuli. Ineffective emotion regulation has been linked to numerous clinical conditions, including depression. The high occurrence of such clinical conditions has a high economic and cultural impact on today’s society.
There are two state of the art models of the brain emotion network. LeDoux’s model builds on the idea that humans developed a survival mechanism for immediate threat detection that required fast responses to visual stimuli, with two routes (cortical and subcortical) involved in the process of threat detection. Pessoa’s model also describes cortical and subcortical routes, but with a higher emphasis on the cortical route, which includes parallel processing of the stimuli in frontal and parietal brain regions. However, these theoretical models are yet to be empirically validated by a data-driven approach.
Our objective is to study the emotion network using intracranial EEG data from patients undergoing presurgical evaluation for drug-resistant epilepsy, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and two cognitive tasks consisting of images of faces with emotional content.
